The push to ‘Go Green’ is not just about energy conservation. Public opposition to greenfield development has led to increased restrictions, forcing businesses and venture capitalists to seek other options. Recent changes in environmental regulation have made brownfield redevelopment a very attractive alternative for developers and entrepreneurs, not to mention the Jackson community has nationally recognized success in Brownfield developments.

Brownfield site redevelopment can provide companies an opportunity to build a tax base, rejuvenate decaying infrastructure, establish a good rapport with the community and revitalize depressed urban areas. There are also many monetary benefits to reutilizing brownfields:



Brownfield redevelopment projects are prevalent all across the country. There are many here in Michigan.

The County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (BRA) Board meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 a.m. at the County Tower Building in the Commission Chambers-5th Floor. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 2, 2012.

EPA Assessment and Clean Up Grants

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the Jackson County BRA $400,000 in environmental assessment grants; $200,000 for Hazardous Substance and $200,000 for Petroleum Assessments. Assessment funds can be provided to an eligible company/developer to perform environmental assessments/due diligence for qualifying properties with redevelopment potential.

In May 2009, The County BRA was awarded a $1 million Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund Grant, which is available to eligible companies/developers to perform environmental cleanup for properties with redevelopment potential. Loans and/or sub grants can be negotiated.
