Help Us Create Armory Arts Village
Armory Arts Village is being created as a special place where arts, creativity and innovation are infused into an experience for everyone who lives, works, does business, learns or visits there. This one-of-a-kind mixed-use neighborhood is being developed on the historic site of the 19th century Jackson State prison. Its beautiful stone and brick buildings, along with its turreted stone walls perched high above the Grand River, provide the perfect setting for a creative incubator in Jackson.
Phase one of developing this exciting creativity-focused neighborhood is Armory Artswalk Apartments: An adaptive re-use of three of the historic buildings on the Armory Arts Village site. This unique residential community will offer income-qualified residents affordable living space, designed to meet the distinctive needs of emerging artists, musicians, writers, craftsmen, designers, and other creatives that have the passion and commitment to make their living through their art. It will provide residents with:
- The opportunity to be part of a dynamic community of creatives who challenge, inspire and collaborate with each other to produce new perspectives, experiences, work and products
- Affordable space that offers the ability to live and work under the same roof
- Apartments with open floor plans, allowing for flexible tailored use of the space to meet individual needs
- Access to shared specialized work, exhibit, and performance facilities
- Seminars and workshops designed to help residents develop their art into small businesses, micro-enterprises and other types of entrepreneurial endeavors
- Exposure to the public and specific markets for their work
- A valuable bridge between academic training and the real world of working creatives
All of this in a setting that infuses daily activities with inescapable interest, inspiration and a sense of place.
Armory Artswalk Apartments is also ideally located within a half-hour drive of the university and cultural centers of Ann Arbor and East Lansing. Also, it is within four blocks (via the River ArtsWalk that is currently under development) of Jackson's historic train station - with Amtrak service to Chicago, Detroit and New York.
Application Timeline, Process & Materials:
Armory Artswalk Apartments is currently under construction and is slated for completion in January 2008. These residential units are kept affordable by funding that requires residents to meet income qualifications. Confirmation of income will be required within ninety days of move-in. Spaces are limited, so interested applicants are strongly encouraged to pre-apply. Names of applicants who pre-apply and meet income qualifications will be added to an official pre-qualified list. All qualified applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Application materials are available now and can be found here.
