Live Better in Jackson County

Claiming to be ‘bored’ in Jackson County is considered blasphemy by many of its citizens. With so much to do in the area, it’s a surprise that the word even exists here at all.

The Arts

No matter the season, there is always something to do in Jackson County that not only entertains, but enlightens as well. The Dahlem Environmental Education Center, Hurst Planetarium, ART 634 Studio, Armory Arts Village, Jackson Symphony Orchestra and Potter Center all offer great shows and programs that are sure to please the mind. The 1935 Historic Michigan Theatre presents a wide variety of films, plays and musical productions.

The Ella Sharp Museum of Art & History is one of the best in Michigan, earning a citation as the ‘Best Small Museum’ from Michigan Living magazine, accreditation by the American Association of Museums, a listing as a State of Michigan Landmark, as a local historic resource and on the National Register of Historic Places. Cascades Falls, a notable man-made waterfall built in the 1930s, lights up the dark nights during the summer, where various light shows, concerts, festivals and parades occur almost daily.

Jackson County is home to many major and national retail chain stores, most of which reside in the City of Jackson at the two major shopping centers - Westwood Mall and Jackson Crossing. A 560,000 square foot town center mall, Northpointe Town Center, is proposed for the 2008-2009 construction season in Blackman Charter Township. Those seeking out specialty stores and antique collections are also in luck. Jackson County has a strong collectibles presence, as many antique treasures can be found in shops and boutiques speckled across the county.

Those who love the outdoors need not feel left out. Some of America’s most extensive outfitters are located here in Jackson County, including Schupbach’s and Knutson’s. Rock legend Ted Nugent’s hunting preserve is located in the county and offers exceptional hunting and fishing opportunities.

The Eats

There are over 200 restaurants in Jackson to appease even the most refined palette or the pickiest eater. Offering a number of full-service Italian bistros, savory steakhouses, Mexican/Southwestern fiestas, customary Chinese/Asian restaurants, classic American diners and fast-food establishments. Jackson is renowned for their Coney Islands as well. Jackson is not just a great place to eat, but is also designated as one of America’s best markets to open a restaurant.

Jackson County is a great region for recreational and sporting activities. With its rolling hills, beautiful lakes, and lush parkland, Jackson County makes its terrain perfect for four seasons of recreation including hiking, golfing, water recreation, hunting and fishing, bird watching, camping, snowmobiling, and much more.

Jackson County has a national reputation for the number, quality and affordability of its golf courses. With 22 public courses, the county boasts more golf holes per person than any other community in the country except Sarasota, Florida. In 1997, Golf Digest rated Jackson County 14th in the national ranking of best places to play golf. Jackson County was also named 4th best golf value in America by Golf Digest Magazine in 2004.

If action sports are more to your liking, NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races occur regularly at nearby Michigan International Speedway. During the summer, the two-mile, 1,400 acre speedway oval hosts three Nextel Cup Series races. The track has reserved seating for over 137,000 race fans, including a brand new suite level and club seating section. MIS contributes $400 million in total economic impact to Michigan, with $260 million in direct economic benefit. Its events employ more than 5,000 people with a payroll of approximately $5 million.
